The Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors Limited (AIQS) was formed on 4 January 1971 by the merger of two previous Institutes which date back to 1908. Today the Institute has around 3,200 members with many of these residing in other countries, particularly in the South East Asia and Pacific region.

The Institute strategic goals for the next three years are primarily concerned with improving business opportunities for members, raising professional standards and expanding educational programs for members. This includes the continued development of the Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors and international cooperation through the ICEC.The Institute publishes quarterly The Building Economist which includes the "Current Construction Costs Guide", news and educational articles.

Other Institute publications include the Australian Journal of Construction Economics & Building, the Australian Standard Method of Measurement of Building Works (5th Edition), the Australian Cost Management , the OMNI Newsletter (for overseas members) and individual Chapter newsletters.

Reciprocity of membership is currently available with the Association of South African Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS), the Canadian Institute of Quanatity Surveyors (CIQS), the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NZIQS), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Singapore Institute of Surveyors and Valuers.

Others appropriately qualified in quantity surveying, cost estimating, cost engineering, construction economics etc may be eligible for membership. For details please contact Carole Ward.
